Is Michelle Obama trying to kill me?

I have a post up at the PJ Lifestyle blog asking "Is Michelle Obama trying to kill me?" that looks at the new changes to Happy Meals. Go take a look at it and read the comments --some are quite entertaining as well as insightful.

"give up hope all ye who enter here" should be paraphrased for those choosing to "eat" at mcdonalds.

if you are going to threaten your digestive system with whatever is sold over that restaurant`s counter, then you have to accept the results...whether you get apple slices or more fried extruded hydrolysed starch.

and dietary guidance from a fat lady?

I like McDonalds apple pies and stock, but what's with the "magic fruit?"

Is there a specific word that refers to governance by insufferable busybodies? "Nannyocracy" maybe?

ZorroPrimo,

I know you're joking but that could have been interpreted as a threat so I took it down.

The government isn't telling you what to eat unless you're too useless to cook for yourself and rely on restaurants to feed you. What a lot of fuss over nothing.

I'm sure that was best.

Some people have a deathly allergy to peanuts. So what's next, banning Planter's and peanut butter?

I mean, seriously. If you don't want apples with your Happy Meal, simply tell the clerk. If McDonald's won't provide you with the food you order, leave. Go to Burger King or Wendy's or wherever.

People vote with their feet.

Wrong. The more they intrude, the more they will intrude. How long before they decide to track what you buy at the grocery? The technology already in place with the customer loyalty cards.

Your attitude enables government to rob us of our freedoms one step at a time. But, of course, what do you have to worry about as long as you walk lock step in line with what you "should be" doing?

Well, I guess you got me there, DADvocate. I use cash at the grocery store (no customer loyalty cards here, or not at the store I go to anyway) because I don't like the feeling of being tracked much.

Nevertheless, McMaggots, according to the film "Supersize Me", refers to its customers as "users" on a scale from light to heavy and there are many videos on YouTube showing how their "food" doesn't rot like normal food - for years in the case of the "fries" - so I'm not really sure if it's food they're even selling. At least an apple is actual recognizable food, but I do get your point.

Thag - your hatred of McMaggots is no reason to destroy our rights. Run anti-McMaggot ads, right letters to the editor warning of the dangers of eating McMaggots food, just leave our rights alone. Totalitarianism is worse than french fries.

BTW - you don't want to know, in private, what we call people who want to control every little bit of our lives for our own good. (Or, what I think deserves to be done to those people except that the law forbids it.)

Thag, make a thin beef patty out of organic beef, grill it to well done, and leave it out for a month. No mold.

Same thing if you cook shoestring fries, even using organic potatoes and oil. Both products have very little moisture, which makes then lousy growth media for mold.

Now you know!

Thag, you might want to go read this post from Ann Althouse's blog from last Monday. It discusses this article.

Mark Bittman, who for years wrote "The Minimalist," a useful and entertaining recipe column in the food section of The New York Times, is now an op-ed columnist for the paper. That's too bad, because he was much better at the former job. In an essay that ran in the Sunday edition of the Times, Bittman gets excited about the "fun" and "inspiring" project of taxing Americans into better eating habits. Like Kelly Brownell, who runs the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, Bittman wants to "tax things like soda, French fries, doughnuts and hyperprocessed snacks" while subsidizing "the purchase of staple foods like seasonal greens, vegetables, whole grains, dried legumes and fruit."

Sweet. I'd buy one, then wear it to McDonalds and order some fries...

That Bittman guy is a typical out of touch idiot who has obviously never known any actual poor people.

I think I'm just tired of hearing people talk about diets and "why am I faaaaat???" It's because you bloody well eat too much and sit on your arse too much. The end.

People didn't used to eat such large servings at dinner, nor did supermarkets have 5 aisles of chips, soda and cookies. It's amazing (though not really) how many times I walk past the ice cream and see a fat person reaching in for a tub. This isn't half as complicated as people seem to imagine and I think a lot of it is that you can't fight against people's rationaization hamsters, to borrow Roissy's term, that are obviously in much better shape than they are.

i`m biased. i just got back from an hour bike ride through the city to a meal of whole wheat pasta with butter, fresh pepper and some very old english cheddar.

but, i guess people have the freedom to eat what they want to...it`s just that some seem to miss the connection between their diet and their huge (insert your favorite body part here).

and don`t fight other people`s rationalisations, you could get hurt....

I have an offer to make to Her Highness. I'm eleven and a half years older than she is, and I have the receding hairline, large bald crown, and (not much) grey hair to prove it. She and I can go an a bicycle ride of, say, forty miles. If I complete the ride first, she has to eat only the things that she recommends that we all eat - for the rest of Obama's term in office (that way she and I will be wishing for the same thing). If she finishes first, I have to eat those things for the rest of his term in office. If she can't ride forty miles (it will involve hills) faster than a fifty-nine-year-old man, she doesn't deserve even to suggest what we should eat.

Whaddya think?
