Vasectomy rates up

Hmmm, this is kind of interesting:

Doctors around the United States are reporting a sharp increase in the number of vasectomies performed since the economy soured last year, with one noting that many of his clients are from the beleaguered financial industry.

Their best guess is that the trend is due both to a decreased desire to have children because of the expense involved, and an increased desire to get such medical procedures done before their jobs -- and health insurance -- disappear.

Since November, Dr. Marc Goldstein, surgeon-in-chief of male reproductive medicine and surgery at the Cornell Institute for Reproductive Medicine in New York City, said his practice has seen about 48 percent more vasectomy consultations compared to the same time the previous year.

Nearly 50 percent of the patients in 2008 were employed within the financial industry, and more than 36 percent were seen since September, according to unpublished data from the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Microsurgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

I wonder if when the recession turns around, these men might regret their decision. Perhaps not, many men who get vasectomies generally seem relieved--depending on why they got the vasectomy. Here is a site that has some advice for men considering a vasectomy that looked pretty decent and seemed to indicate that men who thought through their decision felt okay about it. On the other hand, there are books like If It Works, Don't Fix It: What Every Man Should Know Before Having a Vasectomy that tells the story of a man who had a botched vasectomy but I imagine this is rare. Anyway, if you have an opinion on the topic, share it in the comments.

My dad told me an old rhyme that is wonderfully out of it's time and is completely off point: Women make passes at men who have vasses.

A simpler time? Well, at least a different time.

I don't know if 'botched 'is the term but there is a very miniscule, but definite incidence of pregnanacy following vasectomy. Nothing is perfect.

But if you are certain you want no more kids vasectomy is far less risky for both parent and progeny than other measures such as tying the tubes, or contraceptive pills.

I knew a guy was so tough, after his vasectomy he joggd home. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

When I turned 13, my dad sat me down and explained to me that I was carrying a loaded weapon.

I replied, "Yeah I know. I was cleaning it in the shower this morning, and it went off."

There's a vas deferens between a man who's had one and a man who hasn't.

On the other hand, while vasectomies, as uncle ken noted, don't work perfectly, they probably do cut down the likelihood of being sued successfully for child support.

What you see here is an integral part of the devolution of the familial ethic under pressure from the leviathan State.

Time was, we understood children to be one of the chiefest of all reasons to love, and to rejoice in love. But when the legal and political hazards rise too high, to say nothing of the emotional ones, we retreat from procreation.

As Mark Steyn has observed, we're running short of posterity to secure the blessings of liberty for -- and we have only ourselves to blame.

I guess I've lost my sense of humor.

I see two issues in "...done before their jobs -- and health insurance -- disappear."

One is the likely loss of job.

The other is certain loss of insurance that involves any personal choice.

I wonder if it's a coincidence. As you indicated, Dr. Helen, they may have regrets if they based their decisions on the economy. Less permanent methods would be in order.

My own decision for this procedure was made during the Clinton years, and had nothing to do with the political or economic climates. No more procreation, just recreation was my motivation.

Sorry for the attack of light hearted humor. I'm back to a more normal doom and gloom state.

American is to become third world at break neck speed. You can see it everywhere, in everything. White American males are to be beaten down until they believe they are nothing (except for those firmly entrenched inside the beltway pulling everyone's strings), the cause of all that is wrong in this world, the nation as a whole will become totally dependent on a government that will enslave the entire populace - and we will all watch and allow it to happen with but a whimper and a few comments on various blogs across the Internet, until blogs too, become forbidden. We will continue to enshrine bigotry, glorify homosexuality and feminism, tear the family to shreds, reward the seven deadly sins, make upside down and inside out until all are equally hopeless around the world - all without a fight.
All better now?

Aww give me a break. I am a White American male and I don't gain or lose my self worth via the stuff that is sent out through pop culture.

I am not threatened by homosexuality or worried about the values that my children are taught because I am teaching them values.

If you don't like what is on the television or the radio, change the channel. Just turn it off.

Jack, Just because you don't feel affected doesn't mean it's not there. I'm very tired of people trying to make me feel guilty for being a white male, for being Conservative, for believing that marriage should be legally defined as between a man and a woman, etc. I'm not homophobic, I just don't agree with it.

And I agree with BR, Blogs will become forbidden. I'll get my viewpoints out while I can until Obama's brown shirts take me away. http://tinyurl.com/dbojjg

"Botch" doesn't only refer to post-vasectomy pregnancies. Vasectomy can have serious (but thankfully rare) side effects.

These Vasectomies are a social-suicide. Like the numerous abortions we are killing out children. I believe that we are not doing this consciously but rather these decisions are being made by a super-conscious that governs human societies as a whole.

Look at the history of every human society and you will see mass killings, sacrifices, and slaughter when that society has become corrupt and unable to advance. Western society is dying we westerners are doing the killing. We can't hold gladitorial games or mass human sacrifices to our gods because we are much too "civilized" for that, so our only options are abortion, vasectomy, war and crime.

We have three kids so we weighed the options and I got snipped.
Two words of advice, use the frozen peas for the full three days after - you don't want any swelling down there. And, shave yourself or have your wife, close friend, etc. shave you before you go in. My doctor shaved my poor nutsack like it owed him money and wasn’t taking his calls.
There has been some intermittent pain since, but nothing worse than you might experience after a very busy weekend. It really isn’t that big of a deal, especially after watching my wife give birth to three 9 pounders, I'll keep my complaints to myself.

Br549,

I agree we are being pushed down because men can take it, we have always taken it, men can survive almost anything. In World War I & II those were the dogs that survived, those were the toughest men alive. That man is almost gone those tough and rough as nails men that did the impossible and never once complained. But a downfall of men is that they don't speak up as if they do they will stop being men or something. I just wish men would get off that and fight for their rights as Men as Fathers and a part of society. We have to speak up about things if we want change or suffer the consequences like we are starting to see now. I don't think that it's been actually this bad anytime in our history and if we don't speak up we will go down without a whisper.

This was part of the reason I had one. I didn't want any possible child of mine (fortunately I didn't have any) to have to live in the world that the current generations are leaving them. Future generations are really going to have it bad.

...try Chastity...unless you want a child: it is the godly thing to do.

And for those of us who don't believe in your god, vasectomies will do.

"Botch" doesn't only refer to post-vasectomy pregnancies. Vasectomy can have serious (but thankfully rare) side effects.

They're terrible when they do happen. Mine wasn't completely botched. When I was going through the procedure, the doc either didn't administer enough anesthesia or didn't allow it enough time to work because I felt the doc cutting. After the procedure, and even up to this day, I have a little soreness. If someone touches my scrotum in the wrong way it's extremely painful.

Cham - do you care about society at all?

Just out of curiosity, why does it matter if Cham, or anyone for that matter, cares or doesn't care about society?

I had one 27 years ago. Had two sons, and while I sometimes wonder about whether I should have had another child, bottom line is, two are enough.

There were plenty of terrible examples of irresponsible men in my family and I chose to live my life in a more tidy fashion - no mama drama, no baby daddy stress, no Maury show, just peace and quiet.

I've had a vasectomy as have many of my peers. I know for many, including my brother-in-law, it was a matter of ego. The idea of shooting blanks was really difficult for them to grasp. A second reason was what happens if for whatever reason you get remarried and your new wife wants children?

When I was young, vasectomy was anathema to me largely for religious reasons. Once I discovered I can't stand babies and am not good with teenagers (though I love the stuff in between), it wasn't a difficult choice at all. My wife was just as enthusiastic about limiting our family to four (though she likes babies, which is why she baby sits our granddaughter and not me.)

It is funny that you should mention this, because I am going through a similar situation right now. My current girlfriend and I are becoming somewhat serious and my vasectomy is hanging over the relationship. She is talking about marriage and kids and is upset that I won't get a reversal. I have told her repeatedly that I am not going to get one done and that if she wants kids as bad as she says she does then she ought to dump me and move on to someone who wants to have them biologically (I'm not against adopting). And yet, she continues to remain with me, hoping against hope and wishing against wish.

My vasectomy really took a weight off my shoulders. I can't imagine what my life would have been like had I not had one. I am relatively certain that I would have ended up with her anyways and am also quite certain that I would have impregnated her by now (before she found out that I'd had one she was constantly trying to convince me to not use condoms; I can only imagine that one or two of them might have had a hole or two poked in them).

It's amusing all the talk of societal suicide and owing society children to continue it from people supposedly going Galt.

What I owe society is that taxes that are used to pay for services such as roads, fire, police (I'd pay not to have those around), schools (why should I pay for your children? will you finance my Ferrari?) and various other vague tax blackholes. Outside of that, society can take a flying leap.
