Going Fishing

I am heading to Florida for a bit and will continue blogging if and when I find things of interest to tell readers about; remember, I wanted this chair so I could blog while traveling to the beach--so blogging might be light or not. In the meantime, let us know if you had a vacation this year, either with friends, family or on your own so we can live vicariously through your good times (or sympathize if they were not so good). Or if you decided not to take a break, why not? Do you dislike free time? Gas prices? Family squabbles? None of these?

I'll be spending most of August in the High Uintas. I'm not worried about costs because I'm not paying for the trip, my friends are. All I have to do is show up.

I'm in Martha's Vineyard for the week with my family (husband and 7- and 8-year-old daughters). Last night, I finished my first book of fiction, a mystery for middle-graders. Today, the beach! Tomorrow, the beach! Monday, the beach!

I'll be vicariously enjoying all the vacation reports. After moving from west to east coast last summer, we are having a light vacation year. May try to find a cabin or campsite by a river for some R&R in early fall; till then we'll be checking out the offerings close to home. I don't consider the family reunion we attended earlier in the summer a vacation, even though it was fun and mostly squabble-free.

Being self-employed, I don't get to go on vacation very often. It's not like when I was a teacher, had a steady source of income deposited directly in my bank account every month and summers off with pay. Then I traveled and had a lot of fun. But not anymore.

I did get to take the last few days off though, mainly because I couldn't go anywhere. Hurricane Dolly swept through here on Tuesday and Wednesday with strong winds and heavy rain. It wasn't as bad in my area as it was in others, where floods and power outages wreaked havoc. Fortunately, we never lost electricity, so mostly I just sat around for two days, surfing the net and reading.

I do plan on taking a vacation later this year however, on the weekend of Sept. 28. I'm going to the last Cowboys vs. Redskins game at Texas Stadium. Now that's my idea of a good time. I usually go to three or five games a year, but this time I'm flying my brothers and best friend to Dallas because this particular game is historic. It cost me a lot of money, but I don't care. Some things are worth paying for.

Having moved back to the Ozarks after an abysmal year and a half in Florida, I am on vacation. At least, I feel like I am.

We spent almost three weeks in June and July at a family cottage on Lake Michigan in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Woke up to the sound of waves, went to sleep to the sound of waves.

Each evening, we would walk along the beach to the lighthouse while watching the sunset.

Then we stopped at an ice cream stand along the Grand River and had ice cream cones with our seven and three year old daughters, and watched the boats go by.

Here are some pics of our Michigan visits over the last two years.

We hope to spend one more weekend there before school starts in a few weeks.

I just returned from a week at the beach with college friends. Always an enjoyable time, even after 20 years. It's about the only time that we get to see each other.

Politics only came up minimally. I have a died in the wool democrat friend. I'd call him relatively uninformed though. He's not an active political junkie; He just comes from a family of democrats and he just chants the fashionable phrases. A couple of years ago I challenged some of his comments, and he growled about "Chimpy" being the stupidest person on the planet and if we had Kerry, at least we won't end up with "another 150,000 dead". I dropped the subject.

He still made a few comments this year... His record is still skipping on how Bush is still the stupidest man alive.

So this year, I let it go and didn't even go there for a discussion. These are good friends of mine regardless of their politics. And we focused on that.

I just sighed to myself and moved on. The rest of the friends are apolitical. We focused on the fun, food, and beer and we all had a great time.

Hope you and yours have a great time fishing, Doc. I never have liked putting gooey worms on hooks though.

This year our family reunion will be my vacation. It's normally held in Arkansas the first part of August and the smaller Colorado contingent comes "home" to visit.

This year the Colorado relatives are hosting and us Ark-La-Tex people are going to the mountains. (Almost half the (very large) family traveled to Colorado to work in the 60s, and some stayed)

I'll be hiking in the Black Canyon and San Juan mountains, enjoying temperatures in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Maybe into the 90s or even 100s (a dry heat, to be sure) if we get some desert or sand dunes time.

I haven't been back in 10 years and I hope my lungs can adjust from 300 to 8,000 ft.

Two weeks in France. Four days in Paris, 10 in Provence. Excellent. It did cost $95 Euros to fill up the tank. Ouch.

Worth it. Really enjoyed both Paris and the south of France. When your in Europe it seems like something cool is just around every other corner.

Oh look, another castle.

Please, no blogging after 5 mai-tai's. Wouldn't want the dreaded blogging under the influence charge... ;-)

More seriously, welcome to my state, have fun, spend lots of money. We need the taxes. Thanks.

I don't understand how people can go off on vacations and "do nothing." I'm a painter and for me vacations, never longer than a week to 10 days, are about putting 5 or 6 canvases in the back of my station wagon and heading for a part of the country that's radically different than where I live (the northeast). When the canvases are used up the vacation is over. The tourist thing - wandering around and looking at scenery or wandering in and out of shops - strikes me as hell.

My break involved heading to Mukwonago, WI, the little town where my snowbird folks like during the warmer months, to celebrated their 50th anniversary. I got to see a lot of my cousins, whom I seem mostly to see nowadays at funerals for the prior generation, and all their surprisingly beautiful progeny, as well as my brothers and sisters and lovely nieces and nephews.

Because my middle child, Aidan, has childhood onset schizophrenia, I don't really have much of what one might call a vacation. I spend the time I accumulate on taking care of him when his school schedule doesn't match up with that of my wife (who teaches Waldorf) and kids. Summers I tend to work more, since my colleagues want time off to enjoy the non-snowiness, and I'm able to cut deals to cover for them so that I've got more time during the school year to do what I need to do, and to prepare for the evening classes I teach at St. Michael's College during those times.

Strangely, the high price of gas has proved something of a boon to me with regards to visiting my parents--Mom has frontal lobe dementia that affects her memory and Dad has macular degeneration, so I see them when I'm able--insofar as it allows me to justify flying rather than driving, which for the distances involved still means less exhaustion upon arrival there or home. I've learned to exhibit a zen-like calm at airports, as much as I hate them.

In the eight years that I've lived here in Vermont, none of my sibs ever has visited. They might have when one of our cousins got married on the Canadian side of Lake Memphramagog, but alas! we were at the NIH on one of our two-year visits. They're generally as strapped as I am, since none of our children goes to public school.

I will admit to finding it hard to step away from the blog when I'm gone. It seems that I've become addicted to the adulation and denunciation, both.

I should add that in my former life, before I became a father, I travelled widely and lived in Italy, Mexico and the Czech Republic for extended periods. Perhaps those days will return.

I haven't had a vacation since 2005. Pregnancy and maternity leave eat up all my allotted time off. Believe me that is not a vacation, no matter how it is classified at work. I'm not complaining exactly. My babies are worth it. Although it would be nice if my employer would grant some paid maternity leave independent of vacation time. It would be compassionate.
