Obama vs. McCain Bumper Stickers

I saw a mini-van this afternoon with Obama bumper stickers plastered on the back that read "Latinos for Obama" and "Women for Obama" (I wish I'd had my camera on me but since I am now carrying a wallet instead of a purse, I never have anything--this experiment won't last long). Anyway, the other day, I saw a McCain bumper sticker. In contrast to the Obama one, it was plain, just said "McCain President."

I looked up both of the official websites of the two candidates and got a kick out of the differences in the bumper stickers and logos. Here are McCain's bumper stickers-- note that they are plain although there is one that says "Veterans for McCain." Obama's bumper stickers, in contrast, run the gamut from "African Americans for Obama," to "Latinos for Obama" to "Women for Obama" all the way to "Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders" for Obama." I have to hand it to him, he does include "Republicans for Obama," but why break everyone up into every group imaginable? Good grief. I thought Obama was supposed to be the candidate that brought us all together, in spite of race. It seems to me that even his bumper stickers emphasize the differences between us--rather than just being Americans, suddenly, we're divided into whatever group we belong to. Is that really the message he wants to send?

Update: These stickers and buttons were listed under "apparel" on the McCain website. I guess identity politics goes both ways. Yuck. Thanks to readers for pointing this out.

Update II: Sorry about enabling moderation folks, but here is an example of the high level of discussion we would be treated to had I not:

Dear Mrs. Ernest T. Bass,

Please go fuck yourself.

Very truly yours . . .

Dave.

This combination of dissing the South, cursing, and offering no substance is pretty much standard from these guys.

Patrick Ruffini's recent analysis of Obama's logo itself may shed some light:

"Watching Obamamania unfold over the last few days, I have gradually come to the realization that we are living through the first Presidential campaign that is being marketed like a high-end consumer brand.

"The logo itself is a good jumping off point. The typical Presidential campaign logo usually features some variant of the stars and stripes. Beyond patriotism, they have no message. They are pretty much interchangeable between Republicans and Democrats.

"Obama’s logo rearranges these patriotic elements into an emblem that distills his message to the core: the hope of the sun rising [or, Republicans, is it setting?] over amber waves of grain, with the novelty of the candidate’s unusual last name reinforced in an “O”. Unlike virtually every political logo in history, this one doesn’t shy away from the glows and gradients meant to give modern corporate logos realism and depth. And like good corporate logos, this logomark can be disaggregated from the candidate’s name, in the same way that the swoosh instantly screams “Nike” or the circular logos of BMW and Mercedes spark instant associations with affluence and prestige."

Though I only see three groups in the pulldown menu (Veterans, Women and Lawyers), McCain probably has as many group supports as Obama.

There's a crucial difference between veterans (as in vets for McCain) and Latinos, women, conjoined twins, etc. Someone is a veteran by virtue of what he or she has done, not what he or she looks like, or how many oppression points, etc. As for the page on the McCain site linked in the comment above, those are interests groups, again, wholly distinct from "I'm more oppressed than you are!"

And what's wrong with plain?

Democrats love to appeal special interest groups. Back in January, I reviewed the main candidates issues pages. On his web page Obama had less of this than Clinton or Edwards. Edwards had appeals to every group I'd ever heard of and then some.

The Democratic method since the rise of Bill Clinton has been to use the Nixonian technique of driving a wedge between different groups of people, hoping that the group on your side gives you more votes than the other group.

Every time I see a bumper sticker with "this group" for "this person" it turns me off. I'm not going to put a "Middle aged white guys for..." on my car either. Or, maybe I will.

This is becoming an echo chamber. I'm a pretty conservative Republican, and I prefer Obama to McCain, though I'd take McCain in a heartbeat over Hillary.

I prefer Obama because he's smarter than McCain and because he appears more honest. Yeah, he's had issues with Wright etc., but so has McCain, with lying about Romney and the Keating Five scandal (in which he really was a tool).

Let's elect a person, not a party.

Please don't vote. Here's an announcement to all of you people who actually believe that any politician is honest or not looking out for special interests. Every politician is looking out for a special interest - the people who vote for them (The Political Economy of the New Deal is a pretty primer on this subject). The Democrats look out for the people who vote for them - minorities, women, the poor, young people, and union members. Republicans look out for people who vote for them - middle-aged to elderly people, whites, people smart enough to invest, and business leaders. Who's to say whether one party's special interest groups are more important than the other?

Sorry, that should have read "is a pretty good primer).

In addition to all of that, politicians are professional liars. Their jobs are to paint any government actions in a positive light. The Republicans and Democrats both spin their protectionist policies and horrible economic policies in positive lights. In reality, they're all just competent thieves. Both parties are just in the business of taking money from one group and giving it to another. Both are statists. Both are paternalistic. Either one is just as bad as the other.

Hillary is a liar, selfish & shameless.

Obama is naive, careless & waay too far left.

McCain is already having verifiable senior moments! Yikes!

We are screwed, people... no matter which one you think you could tolerate!

A bumper sticker: None of Them!

None of them has clue one about the economy & what could be more crucial this time around!?

Eliot Spitzer was right, when he tried to bring up the idea of regulation for hedge funds & investment banks..

Well, he's toast now. What a jerk.

He was right about the need for improved regulation, but nobody wanted to ruin the Wall St PARTY...

Bumper sticker: Congress: DO YOUR JOB!

(no, no, no.. NOT earmarks! Sheesh!)

We, the people..

Are the least of politicians concerns.

Wake up, America.. How do we, the formerly richest country in the world, get to where we are today?

We still have the best infrastructure, sagging as it is.. We still have great educational institutions, overcrowded as they are, we still have so many great companies & people, as beat up as they may be right now..

And, now thanks to the internet, we do not have to depend on the Govt or the media. We can circumvent their lies and figure out what is really going on.

Such as: there is no shortage of oil.

There's just a ton of people buying oil futures, driving up the price.

Now.. what are we going to do about it?

Hmm.

The Obamessiah

Personally, I think anyone naive enough to say "there is no such thing as false hope" is too naive to be president.

I'm troubled by the fact that he gave stature to a racist preacher by attending the church as a US Senator. The thought of the sort of people he promises to meet and negotiate with, thus giving them the stature of association with the President of the US (the office, not the man who holds it), is even more troubling.

Dr. Helen,

Actually, the Obama campaign is very careful which identity groups it has materials for. There are all the various hyphenated Americans, religious groups and special interests, but there is nothing to indicate the tremendous support for Obama by Arab Americans and Muslims. The Obama campaign offers Hebrew buttons, but no Arabic buttons. They sell buttons for Irish Obama (O'bama?) supporters that are green with a shamrock, as well as other variations on the logo, but there is no Obama logo as a Muslim crescent and star, which actually works well graphically.

It's almost as though the campaign doesn't want the general public to know just who supports Obama.

For more information check this out.

I'm sure that Obama supporters would say that an opponent making Arabic Obama gear is unfairly implying that he's a Muslim. If a crescent and star version of his logo implies that he's a Muslim, I suppose that the shamrock must mean he's a leprechaun.

The ethnic stuff is popular with supporters on both sides of the aisle. The campaigns wouldn't sell them if they didn't turn a profit. Actually, nowadays they sell stuff they used to give away like lawn signs and buttons. A friend of mine collects campaign memorabilia and ethnic political advertising/campaigning goes back a long ways.

In '04 I made some Hebrew Bush/Cheney apparel. Not only did Jewish Republicans like them but I was a volunteer on the Bush campaign, ended up on the ropeline at a rally and when he shook my hand, GWB said, "Like the hat". I know at least one Latino Bush supporter who had Viva Bush stickers on his car.

I've already gotten an order for some Hebrew McCain stuff. FWIW, unlike most Hebrew campaign memorabilia I don't just transliterate the name into a prayerbook Hebrew font. I think that's kind of lame. I reproduce the look and feel of the original insignia and use Hebrew fonts that look like the original English ones. That way, even if like Pres. Bush you don't know Hebrew, you can figure out that it's a knockoff of the actual logo.

Now maybe Jewish Republicans are a special case, with Hebrew campaign memorabilia having a bit of an ironic aspect to it because of the fact that most Republicans, Jews included, are not fans of identity politics, and also want to make the point that not all Jews reflexively vote Democratic.

Come to think of it, while both campaigns promote themselves to ethnic and interest groups, I think the Dems and Repubs do it for different reasons. The Dems do it because they pretty much champion identity politics and grievance nurturing. The Repubs do it to show that they aren't all rich white guys.

McCain to seek votes Republicans often ignore

I especially think the Hebrews for Obama sticker is funny, because according to a blog I visit he and a lot of his advisers do not perceive Israel very well.

On a related note I was wondering if President Bush has allowed Republicans to become less partisan as it seems like they are focusing more on the content of issues instead of just assuming something is a good Republican idea. Of course, I am pretty young so his presidency was the first one I paid close attention to, so perhaps this has always been true.

I recently saw a sign on a guy's car for Ron Paul and even a letter to the editor yesterday in our local paper was about him. I remember seeing a Romney sticker, but he might have still been in the race back then.

Joe - I am a conservative Republican (although apparently if you didn't support Romney you aren't a true conservative) and I think that Clinton is far better than Obama. A recent poll finds that people trust McCain slightly more than Obama.

J. Bowen - You didn't mean the cover is really pretty? :) Thanks for the link, my favorites are the first one of Hillary and the first one of Obama. Don't you think matriarchy is more accurate than patriarchy?

Chip Ahoy - You left out Japanese for Obama.

You miss the point entirely. Mentioning, alluding to or even (gasp!) celebrating the diversity of support for Obama is not the same as dividing groups of people into discrete blocks, as you imply. It's a way of saying "Yes, me too."
