Snapped in the New York Times

The show "Snapped," the Oxygen show about women who murder was in the New York Times the other day (thanks to the reader who sent the link):

Were you to spend a day at home in the exclusive company of your remote control, you might come to the conclusion that “Snapped” was the most consistently rerun show on television. A true-crime series set to begin its sixth season on the Oxygen network in the fall, “Snapped” appears every Sunday night and for hours and hours each weekday. Should you happen upon it on a random Wednesday morning, you might feasibly reorganize a closet, do some yoga in your living room, make a brisket and still never be forced to change the channel to find something new to watch.

“Snapped,” which made its debut three years ago, is about women who murder. It remains among Oxygen’s highest-rated shows, having had an instrumental role in recasting women’s television away from its celebrations of victimhood to its new fetish for female aberrance. (“Snapped” is rivaled in popularity on Oxygen only by “The Bad Girls Club,” a reality show whose title precludes the need for any explanation.)

I can vouch for the endless reruns of this show. I was an expert on for the first season and a half and get at least someone every week saying that they have seen me on one of the shows within the last week. I don't get the Oxygen channel on my cable network but apparently the show runs all day long. If you get the Oxygen network, you can check out the show times here.

Snapped is to Oxygen what Sportscenter was to ESPN. Though Sportscenter addiction, I would argue is an absolute good.

They could have one show for each woman who has killed someone in the last 6 years. That would be roughly 1,400 women a year (at least known under the UCR). They could profile every female murderer in the U.S. with months to spare (in a 30 minute episode.... Hmmm... I think it provides a nice balance to Oprah.

Troy,

Actually, Oxygen is owned, in part, I believe by Oprah. When the angry feminists were writing into the Snapped show with outrage about a show that featured women who killed for reasons other than self-defense, some of the sites I saw were asking their readers to write to Oprah to cancel the show.

It's a relief to know that some of the women watching Oxygen realize that not all women are saints and not all men are bad.

Haven't seen this one. Have they done Erzsébet Báthory? She was fun.

Have checked out Most Evil on the Discovery Channel. There's an episode on female serial killers, but I haven't seen it yet. I note from the Wikipedia entry on the show that all the murderous women except Aileen Wuornos killed either their own children or patients under their care as nurses. Oh, and Karla Homolka and Myra Hindley - but their boyfriends made 'em do it. Does Snapped include serial killing women, or just those who...well, Snapped?

Is this True Crime (documentary a la CourtTV) or is it docudrama? I haven't seen it.

Myrtle Hocklemeier,

It's pretty much true crime with witnesses, the killers and law enforcement etc. telling the story of the killer, from their early life to the trial.

Bugs,

Originally, the episodes seemed to center on women who killed husbands but it includes women who kill other women such as the West Point case where a woman and a boyfriend killed the boyfriend's love interest. I haven't seen any episodes about female serial killers but I have only seen the first two seasons.

bugs-

So-called "Black Widow" killers that seduce or marry men and then kill them are technically considered serial killers, so I'm not sure the Discovery Channel show is accurate. And those kinds of killers are hard to detect, so the "traditional" statistics on female serial killers could be way off.

I've seen an episode or two, but stopped watching because I deeply resent (as I'm sure most intelligent men do) the title of the show, because it is setting a dangerous precedent- implying that here we have an entire series and that the only time women ever kill is simply because they were 'driven' to it, so therefore when they kill, it's never because they are mentally ill or evil, but it is in self defense, but when men kill, it is instantly taken for granted that they are evil psychos. Yet men 'snap' all the time- the real reason they kill. The irony is that women almost always kill because they really are evil. It is all backwards.
Living in this kind of environment (the US today) is exactly why I will never live with a woman ever again- it's simply far too dangerous. Murder is legal for women.

Murder is legal for women.

Aileen Wuornos would be surprised to hear that.

On the other hand, Karla Homolka and the government of Quebec probably wouldn't.

But of course, obviously notice that Alileen Wuornos was an off the hook serial killer- that's practically what it takes for a woman to get jail time.

The most recent case of Mary Winkler makes any sane person of any intelligence want to puke.

Obviously, stating murder is legal for women is not supposed to be true for 100% of the cases, but we all know how this works- it's extremely difficult to prosicute women for murder. Everyone understands what I meant. Trying to dance around the subject is what attorneys do- it's what they get paid for.. what's your excuse?

Kind of off topic, but I could have sworn the most re-run show had to be Law and Order or Becker.
