Podcast with Mitt Romney

Here at the Glenn and Helen Show, we are hoping to bring to our listeners personal interviews with as many of the potential 2008 Presidential candidates we can beg, uh, I mean invite to come on. So we were delighted when Governor Romney agreed to a "get acquainted" interview with us to talk about his views on national security, the second amemendment, healthcare and what makes him different from the other presidential candidates as well as the Mormon issue.

He also addresses a controversial video that was recently put up on YouTube indicating that the Presidential hopeful is a "flip-flopping" liberal--hear his side of the story in the podcast. You can also read more about Governor Romney at his website MittRomney.com.

You can listen to the show directly (no downloads needed) by going here and clicking on the gray Flash player. You can download the show by clicking right here, and you can get a lo-fi version suitable for dialup, iPhone, etc. by going here and selecting the lo-fi version. And, of course, you can always subscribe via iTunes. You can see our archives here where you can check out our other interviews with Senator John McCain, another presidential candiate for 2008 or Governor Mark Warner, who discussed in our prior podcast with him, why he decided not to run.

I am going out on a limb, but based on your previous podcasts, my guess is its not a long one.
America means freedom.
Did you ask Romeny how forcing people to buy health insurance makes Americans more free?
Did you ask him where in the US Constitution it gives the Federal government the power, the right to force Americans to buy something soley because the Federal government thinks its for the Americans, individuals, own good?
What if, like Maines health program, in a year, the costs and the evidence are beyond doubt that the state program is a disaster, will Romeny withdraw?
Did you ask him some questions based on ecnomics 101, like by forcing demand up while restricting supply, won't that increase price? If not, please explain in detail.
Back to the US constitution, the first amendment says the people have a right to assembly. By forcing companies to accept everyone, doesn't that violate the first? If not, please explain.
By forcing companies to cover everyone, doesn't that violate seizure of property without due process?
Well Dr. Helen did you ask these questions?
No, you didn't.
Again, the internet, bloggers, popularity is because it is NOT the kiss ass MSM.

Uh, terry, if you listened to the podcast she did ask a critical question about his health care plan. Before you start insulting people it might be a good idea to check your facts.

Romney is no friend of the second amendment.

He did nothing - nada, zippo, squat, to help the gun owners of Mass while he was governor. No vetos, no initiatives, no nothing.

That state with the "most effective gun laws in the nation" has rising gun crime in the middle of an increasingly hostile atitude towards legal gun owners.

Ownership of so much as a spent brass case is cause for imprisonment in Mass. Yup, one lousy empty brass case can get you a felony conviction.

Some will say Romney's silence is because he could not change anything because the house is solidly democratic and it wouldn't do anything and because it is such a contentious issue it would harm his other agenda items.

Sorry, that is a poor excuse for lack of leadership. What will he do as President with a Dem majority in the house and a contentious issue?

Stay silent because he can't do anything? Bah! Even Bush spoke his mind on things like the AWB.

He won't be getting my vote.

Earl Harding.

This gave me a chuckle:

"If you want to know where I stand by the way, you don't just have to listen to my words, you can go to look at my record as governor," Romney said during a late-day appearance on the "Glenn and Helen Show," a radio program featuring Tennessee psychologist Helen Smith and her husband, Glenn Reynolds.

Old media is so cute when they talk about the modern world. But they do raise the question, what radio station is the Glenn and Helen Show on and who the heck is this Glenn guy, Helen’s husband?

Evan M. Thomas,

I actually get a laugh out of it too. I think, however, that most people outside the blogosphere do not know what a podcast is--internet radio show might have been more appropriate. And I think my name and occupation etc. was used to clarify who I was because I asked the question that is on the YouTube video or it could just be reverse sexism towards a man!

In light of your questions regarding discrimination against white males, it would have been nice if you asked him about Massachussets role in laying the ground work for the travesty in Durham and - what I consider his greatest failing as a human being - his unconscionable refusal to even consider lifting the burden that Gerald Amirault labors under each day.

Maybe next time.

I'm an extremist for thinking that because I have a piece of spent brass in my car from a trip to the range I shouldn't be a felon in Mass? And just where did I say anything about all or nothing?

Instead, according to you, it is correct that I can loose my right to vote in many states for a piece of inert metal, and that is not extremism from the state government in your mind?

What is extreme to you? Would you prefer I was detained without trial? Do you ever think there is such a thing as an unjust law? If so, what types of law quality?

Applying the same rules I live by with firearms, you driving 1 MPH over the speed limit should be felony conviction for dangerous driving. You car doing 36 MPH in a 35MPH zone is far, far more deadly in the wrong hands than an inert piece of metal ever could be. You could drive through a bunch of schoolkids waiting for the bus. I could use a slingshot to fire my peice of brass at one of them, but the fine legislators in Mass made those illegal too.

You don't want balance, or reason, just knee-jerk reaction to preconcieved ideas coupled with useless laws.

Perhaps, because I object that one state chooses to make me a felon for something I can freely do in an adjoining state I am an extremist. If so then I am a proud one.

It amuses me no end that the Gays married in Mass bitch and whine that they are not recognized as married in NH.

Welcome to my world. At least they don't become convicted felons because they didn't leave their marriage certificates in Mass.

Anon 1.44pm - I am a shooter too, and I know Taxachussetts is not very hospitable to gun owners. But, are you kidding me when you state that having one spent shell will make you a felon? Earlier today, I called a friend who is a lawyer in Boston, and she criminal defense atty, and a former prosecutor, BTW, said hse had never ever heard of anyone being charged, less convicted for carry ing a spent shell. This women, just so you dont go off on a crazy rant again, is a gun rights advocate, and a NRA member like you and I.
My advice to you, to lessen all the stress you seem to be suffering from - move to a state where rational gun laws exist, and the population are rational about guns and gun ownership. Unlike the folks in cambridge and Boston who get the vapors if the word "gun" is uttered. Texas, Utah, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arizona are a few good places to consider moving to.

Anon 1:44 -

From MGL Chapter 140: Section 121

“Ammunition”, cartridges or cartridge cases, primers (igniter), bullets or propellant powder designed for use in any firearm, rifle or shotgun. The term “ammunition” shall also mean tear gas cartridges, chemical mace or any device or instrument which contains or emits a liquid, gas, powder or any other substance designed to incapacitate.

Mass. law does indeed make no distinction between a brass casing and a live round. Both are ammunition and unlicensed possesion is a felony.

If you read you need a license to carry pepper spray. That's ammo too. A fact I used to point out to a very liberal and anti-gun co-worker that his bear spray from his hikes made him a felon, since he didn't have a FID.

That they are not enforced is irrelevant. Why does it then matter if they don't enforce it? Has principle really become so cheap? Here, let's make anti-government speech illegal. We won't enforce it mind! Just trust us! Hah!

If we do not take a stand against bad laws everywhere then in reality we take a stand against them no-where. The Mass AG really did get slingshots taken off store shelves. You can't make this stuff up.

And since Romney (remember him, the topic of this post) seems to say one thing and do completely another, he won't get my vote. He was in a position to at least be a voice of reason. He is a typical slimey politician.

Oh, and I live in NH, so no need to move. But I travel to Mass often enough.

Helen -

Full disclosure, I am a frequent commenter here and long time supporter of Mitt. I just want to thank you for doing whatever it took to get Mitt on your podcast. As he said, this kind of exposure is very valuable at this stage of the game.

And just one fully bias comment. The job of president is really a job of communication. People may have noticed that in speaking for a half an hour, there were few if any breaks in his sentence structure and thought process. This is what we need on the steps of the Rose Garden to help people understand the complex issues of national government.

Again, thanks of your help and I hope as things progress you have the opportunity to have Mitt back on the show.

Jake,

I also noticed what a clear communicator he was--at one point, I stumbled on a question, yet he picked up on what I was trying to ask and answered it clearly. Glad you took the time to listen to the show. Thanks!

Jack Tanner - what can one expect from a black liberal, but that he will be a coddler of criminals? There, I made a racist statement. But, isnt it the truth? Ever seen s black leftist politician (Harvard/Yale Law school alum or not), who isnt an apologist for black criminals? Oh, I forgot, blacks committ crimes, only becasue they have been oppressed by the evil whitey.
I bet you wont see a single liberal-left black pol or "intellectuial" condemn the monsters who abducted and killed that white couple that Dr helen mentioned in her newest post

Great Interview. I've been hearing of him for a while, so it was good to hear him speak.
If you do get him on again, please get more of his views on immigration. It will be a big issue in 08.

Another infromative and enjoyable podcast. How else can you learn so much about a candidate? I knew very little about Romney, but I am definitely impressed with his thoughtful take on many issues (even where I do not agree).

I only wish you'd pressed him more on immigration. And I think he got off easy on affirmative action (does he discriminate against white people when hiring staff? -- sure sounds like it).

Sound levels were good (in the past I have had trouble hearing some of your phone-in guests, only to turn the volume up and be blasted by your next question. Your melifluous voice loses its charm above 120 db.)

Looking forward to hearing you talk with other candidates. Do you think Hillary will sit down with Insta-Couple? Feed her some barbecue and a few beers and there's no telling what she might say!

Keep up the good work!
