Podcast with Jim Geraghty

geraghtycov.jpgToday, we talk with National Review Online blogger Jim Geraghty about his new book, Voting to Kill: How 9/11 Launched the Era of Republican Leaders. He discusses whether 9/11 will make a lasting difference in American politics, what the Democrats can do to win back "security moms" and other national security voters and whether Hillary Clinton can save the Democratic Party.

There's a lo-fi dialup version -- see the post above. That's a 19kbps file, so it should work fine even on a slow dialup connection.

Hi, Instafolks:

Great 'cast with Jim Gerahty. I agreed with what he said about the Democrats facing a "McGovern-type debacle" in 2008. I think it will actually start with the elections this year.

I'm not a political analyst, but my prediction here is sort of gut-level:

1. All the focus for the progressive netroots is on Ned Lamont's race in Connecticut. He will lose to Lieberman.

2. The loss will galvanize Democratic Party leadership into doing something to distance themselves from the progressives and netroots. They will fire Howard Dean and begin to shore up their centrist positions and candidates. This will cause a massive rupture in the party.

3. The progressive/netroots side will form a third party and will have their own nominee. They'll haul Nader out of the attic, dust him off, and shove him back into the spotlight.

4. This massive party split will cause votes to be siphoned from the Democratic candidate, more than there were in 2000.

5. The Republican candidate will win in a landslide.

There is an interesting coincidence with this interview with the author of "Voting to Kill". On Tuesday, a family quarrel over child custody at a kiddie baseball field erupted in gunfire. Three grandparents were shot dead and the child's father was also shot. This was in Dandridge, Tennessee.

Evidently Tennesseans have been voting to kill too. Maybe the idea was to kill criminals, but they end up shooting each other from time to time. Which is really a lot like the war on terrorism. Now that we have voted to kill, we have gotten a whole lot of what we "wanted". Not only have we voted to kill, we have also voted to torture.

I think that there has been enough voting to kill for a while. I'm going to vote to heal instead. I don't care what the politicians will or won't do to win. I will vote to heal even if my candidate loses 99% to 1%.

Why did Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan both run for President under the Reform Party. Aren't they political opposites? One a traditional conservative and the other an anti-business liberal?
