Don't Blame the Guy, He was Just Hormonal

Dr. Wes is a bit put out with the sexist interpretation a female researcher gives to men with too much testosterone. Does too much testosterone make muscle-bound men cut women off the road in a hormone driven rampage? "Yes," according to a study by a team of researchers on the effects of testosterone:

“Tests on brain cells in lab dishes showed that while a little of the male hormone is good, too much of it causes cells to self-destruct in a process similar to that seen in brain illnesses such as Alzheimer's.”

But it seems rats weren’t enough. It seems the ladies had to go and cross the line:

"Next time a muscle-bound guy in a sports car cuts you off on the highway, don't get mad -- just take a deep breath and realize that it might not be his fault," Ehrlich said in a statement.

Perhaps these same researchers of male deficiencies could try to make sense out of the increased road rage of women in the two decades:

The angry, young male profile of the aggressive driver is changing. The number of non-fatal traffic accidents involving women has increased eighteen percent over the last twenty years. Women's involvement in non-fatal accidents in 2000 was greater than that of men. Dr. Barbara Curbow, an assistant professor of social and behavioral sciences at John Hopkins University, researched the driving behavior of working women. Curbow discovered that women who have a demanding job and the additional stress of providing a good home life for their families "often become Mad Maxine on the roads." Futhermore, Curbow found a stronger correlation between stressful home lives and aggressive driving than aggressive driving caused by job stress. "Road rage was highest for women with low home rewards and high home responsibilities...[it was] lowest for women with high home rewards and high home responsibilities."

So Dr. Wes makes a good point when he says this about "soccer moms":

Have you ever been on the road at the hours between 3PM and 4 PM and seen a woman on a cell phone, sipping a latte, driving an SUV like a bat out of hell as she rushes to pick up her kids from school? It makes us 'muscle-bound guys' look like fairies! Never, ever, pretend such a woman gives a damn about anyone else on the road. Just stay out of her way. It seems womens’ amygdala are in epileptiform tetany at this time of day. Please, Dr. Ehrlich, don’t be too quick to judge male driving habits.

So, according to these studies, for women, it appears that road rage is a social response to stress and for men, it is biological due to too much testosterone. Does this mean that medical and behavioral experts should get men off the hook for road rage incidents since they can't help themselves? I doubt that will ever happen (nor should it, necessarily). I do, however, find it interesting that women's problems always seem to be blamed on other people--you know, those people who do not reward them enough at home, while men's problems are always blamed on the man himself, when convenient, or on biology, but only when convenient.

What do you think, who is more angry on the roads, men or women?

Update: Speaking of road rage, I assisted a colleague in putting out a road rage tape some years ago. I see it is still up on Amazon but I so do not recommend it.

I used to joke that love makes you stupid because the testosterone dissolves the insulation from the brain.

Little did I suspect it was actually true.

Fortunately, I've only been involved in one road rage incident. I'll concede right now that it was partly my fault. I was on International Drive in Orlando, FL, stopped in traffic. The left lane opened up and I moved smartly into it, but apparently the driver behind me found this unacceptable. So the driver tailgated me all the way to the next intersection, where we both turned right, and then right again to head north on the Interstate (I think I-4). The other car passed me clearly in a huff, then pulled in front of me and slowed down. I went to pass on the right (traffic to the left) and was cut off. So I hesitated, went further to the right and got partially past, but then the other driver headed straight toward me, across two lanes and most of the shoulder, in an apparent attempt to force me off the road. I had the heavier car so I held my ground, heading straight. The other car hit me. Not sure how, but all of us maintained control and pulled over. I was surprised to see that the other driver was a young, twenty-ish woman.

I take partial responsibility, but in the final analysis, it was her who tried to cut me off. The car in question was, I think, a Honda Civic with mirrored windows and fancy headlights, an early tuner car. So I couldn;t see the driver at all until we were stopped.

As I sit there and think about it, I think if I had known it was a woman driving, I might well have gone further out of my way to back off. But I suppose that would have been sexist.

Rusty,

My worse road rage incident was with a man. I stopped suddenly at a red light and did not know my brakelights were out. The guy behind me in got out of the car with a board in his hand, I guess, to knock me upside the head and cursed me up and down while shouting at me to get my lights fixed. I took off through the red light to get away from the guy but I think had I been a guy, he would have grabbed me and hit me in the head before I got away.

My times being threatened while driving were both by men. I notice more distracted women drivers, but have never really compared them to distracted men drivers.

I do recall driving in Denver with my now ex wife, someone cut us off and she screamed at them and flipped them off. I was driving. The other car stopped, it was almost full of teenagers. I was full grown at the time, but a carful of teenagers mad at my wife for flipping them off was a frightening situation. Thankfully, there was a police car near me, the teens opened the door as if to get out at a red light, then thought better of it and made rude gestures through the car.

I pointed at my wife and made a crazy sign and shrugged my shoulders, they started laughing and repeated the motions for the guys in the front seat. Then they looked back and laughed and gave me a thumbs up.

Actually, she was bipolar and in an irritable phase. No testosterone needed!

The differences in people's experiences never cease to fill me with wonder and amazement (he says with significant gratitude for the fact.) I guess I'm too big a dude for people to harass once they see who they're harassing.

But having logged thousands of miles a week at a previous job for many years I've seen a great deal of road rage, just never directed at me.

Men seem more likely to get red in the face and start banging on their steering wheel first. But women drivers who are flipping out seem to have the "I've waited long enough, I'm just going to go." attitude.

I'd say it works out about even. Men will at their worst "confront" while women seem at their worst to "disregard".

I wonder if men can use the surplus testerone defense in court the same way women have used the PMS defense.

The only person to flip me off in the last ten years was a young woman. I think many women, especially young ones, feel secure doing this because a man won't hit a woman. The guy sitting next to me at work got a black eye in a road rage incident a couple of months ago. The perpetrator was a man.

mad william flint has a point, physical size makes a difference. Not many men will risk a fight with someone bigger than them.

Just another point along the way in the effort to demonize, criminalize, outlaw, and control anything male or masculine.

I have no doubt the misandrists and both male and female sadists would like to chemically castrate everyone. (except themselves and their own children, for the most part)

I think there are 2 things to consider, here:

1: The emotions elicited by testosterone are extremely strong. Just ask any woman who’s tried the hormone for a few days. Though made fun of (by those who don’t know), they do cause men to be strictly trained from early on to control themselves. Thus exists civilization. This is also, by the way, a primary reason why “candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.” The testosterone bump-up is not something women are trained to deal with. (To be fair, I cannot comprehend what I would be like if juiced up on estrogen.)

2: If insanity by reason of physiology works for items like post-partum depression murders and less natural effects such as “roid rage” – the modern equivalent to The Vapors and “the devil made me do it” – it shouldn’t be much of a leap to apply it to other hot-blooded mania. I gotcher equality right here.

I believe that one is always responsible for one’s actions, regardless of chemistry or imbalances thereof – making me arguably rather backward on a psychologist’s blog. While sympathy, empathy and serious thought may well be a good response to such problems, those who act out on their baser impulses must needs be held accountable.

John, I think that Helen and I both agree with you totally. I am a shrink too, and a big believer in personal responsibility. Psychology is best used to understand, not excuse a problem. I understand my brain chemistry and ADD, but it is still up to me to remember stuff. Knowing the reason for my spaciness and tendency toward organization helps me see it as a problem that I must solve. There is a sad group of folks that enter our field that are just looking to "rescue" people rather than assist them. They have given the rest of us a bad name. Good post.

Peregrine John and Trey,

Yes, there are psychologists who believe in personal responsiblity--although we are few and far between. A great book on this topic is "Whores of the Court" by Margaret Hagan, a professor of psychology who discusses how mental health professionals excuse behavior with their junk science. I have to say after some of the excuses I have been asked to examine for court (and turned down), I have to agree that there are a number of hired guns who give the rest of us a bad name.

You're right, people do need to be held accountable for their crimes, regardless of sex, age, status or supposed status, race, religion, ethnicity, etc. That includes those who make false claims.

Oh hell, I think it's just too much caffeine. I love the stuff but it does make me pretty edgy!

Coffee consumption reached its nadir around 1990 but it came back strong. Now it's espresso, latte, coffee beans, and of course Mtn Dew, Coke, whatever. Marketers have finally caught on to caffeine-as-mood enhancer. I mean, duh.

If the hired guns, deluded rescuers and sundry bad actors turn out to be a few rotten apples who give the rest a bad name, mayhaps the clear-headedness of Helen and Trey isn't so rare after all? Call it overoptimism, but it could be as a local talk station says, "There are more people who think like you think than you think."

The frequency of road rage compared to dangerously inept and unconcerned driving is ridiculously small. Personally, I'd rather see more interest given to the idiots who risk my life daily should my skills at defensive driving fail me for a brief moment. Perhaps if we reduce these, the incidence of road rage would see a corresponding decrease.

In my experience (and I've been counting, as I described recently on my blog ... we're currently up to 78% in the areas I've lived recently), these are primarily women. I don't believe in gender-based characterizations (or excuses) of personal behavior, so I've been trying to figure out what it is about the culture embraced by women that makes such behavior acceptable.

slug: I am not going to quote "As Good As It Gets." However, I will agree that if people paid attention to where and how they were directing their high-speed lump of metal along the streets, there would be a lot less unpleasantry out there.

I think that men are having more road rage, simply because they're more likely to be paying attention to what they are doing, and slightly less likely to be holding a telephone conversation while driving. The SUV women with the phones are oblivious to the fact that there are other people on the road, and probably could give a rat's butt anyway.

I'm teaching a teenager to drive right now. Among my first pieces of defensive driving advice was, "If you see an Escalade in the rear view mirror, get the heck out of the way!"
