Podcast with Senator John McCain

We were very pleased to have Senator John McCain of Arizona do his first podcast ever with us. Senator McCain takes time out of his busy schedule to speak with us about a number of important political issues including immigration, campaign finace reform, gun control, and pork spending. He has some good advice on anger management for those of us with blogs. In addition, we ask him about his run for the 2008 Presidential election--is Condi going to be his running mate? Tune in and find out.

You can listen to the podcast here or subscribe via iTunes. You can access our archives at the GlennandHelenShow.com. Those with dial-up can listen here. Please leave any comments or suggestions below.

McCain's blather about immigration starts at 18:00.

The problem isn't so much that our immigration laws are flawed, it's that our politicians are corrupt and refuse to enforce them.

As for McCain's use of "guest worker program", our "guests" will have U.S. citizen children and will never leave. He's lying when he calls them "guest workers".

The "tough row to hoe" to get citizenship will be watered down, as past examples show.

His statement that former illegal aliens will "get in line behind everyone else" is also a lie. Those illegal aliens will jump ahead of those in foreign countries waiting for their citizenship chance, and unlike them they'll get to live here the whole time.

And, how exactly are we going to coordinate all those background checks with corrupt, third world countries?

The George Will column he references was a huge strawman argument.

I stopped listening at that point. Did our interviewers bring up similar points?

Anticlimactic interview of Sen. John McCain

I just listened to the latest Glenn and Helen podcast. The prof and doc interviewd Sen. John McCain. I thought McCain came off pretty well but I tuned in hoping for a discussion of McCain/Feingold and it’s free speech limitations. It never came up.

Glenn has been critical of McCain/Feingold in the past and I was looking forward to a "passionate" debate of the topic. Was there a quid pro quo to get him on the show? I’m not upset, just curious. It left this podcast feeling very anticlimactic. All car chase and no crash.

Overall, it was a very good interview. I would’ve liked to have seen you or Glenn call the Senator on his apparent contradiction regarding his position on gun rights. He states he is for gun rights, yet he also supports closing the “gun show loop-hole”. There is no loop hole, only private individuals trying to sell their personal property at the only real venue available to them where they could sell at fair market prices. His position on gun shows is opposite to his declared support of the second amendment, and I feel you and Glenn gave him a pass on this during the interview.

I don't listen to the podcasts, but these critiques are monday morning quarterbacking. Maybe it might be beneficial to have a pre-interview post where you say "I'm going to interview so-and-so - any ideas for questions or lines of questioning?" Although you might want to keep who you're going to interview secret for some reason, it also might be helpful to get some good ideas for questions.

That is a good idea--we have done that with some podcasts such as cardiology--the problem is, sometimes our guests fall through or schedule for another month etc. which is kind of frustrating and leaves people hanging if no podcast on the topic shows up. But in the future, if our commenters don't mind this possibility--we may try getting advance questions. Thanks.

In the introduction Glenn mentioned what the topics would be and what McCain said about them. It would be more interesting if he just mentioned the topics discussed. The pre-interview question poll is a good idea

Why do you do this if your just going to be MSM on ipod?
No tough questions and no excuses for it.
Here are two questions you could've asked:

You defended John Kerry against the swift boat commercials and said Kerry servered honorably in Vietnam.
John Kerry still, to this day, has not released all his military records. How can you say he served honorably when its obvious he is hiding something that would prove otherwise?
Why don't you on the Senate floor, in the interest of open government, call on Kerry to release all his military records?

On campaign "reform" and the "corruption" that is produced by money.
Senator you have been in Congress since 1982, 24 years and in that time you have never turned anybody in for offering a bribe or taking one. If there is some much corruption how come you haven't turned anybody in?

As for appearing impolite, remember taking away our rights, and wealth for themselves while telling us its for our good, is extraordinary rude.

Second ipod I listened too and probably my last since there is no reason to listen if your not going to even try, or pretend to try, to rip them up.

I really enjoy your podcasts. I'm politically a little to the left of you and Glenn, but I really like your style. You have great guests, and you ask them tough questions without being impolite or agressive. I appreciate being able to get a different perspective without having to be turned off by rudeness and anger. Keep up the great work. I'll keep tuning in.

McCain is a liberal Globalist dickk who lies to his constituents even more baldly than most solons to get re-elected. He's loved by the media, which should be the only hint you need to let you know what bad news this man is for America. Please leave this kind of filthy faker out of future podcasts!

Too late. They released me from the sanitarium with a one-word diagnosis: "Insane".

I'll still stand by my claim that McCain and the MSM have way too much seks to take him seriously.

On the other hand, the blind squirrel in question did find a nut in his interview on PMSNBC, transcript from Expose the Left:

At least he knows that when someone throws you a loaded question, you pull the pin and throw it back.
