Beach Blogging

Well, Glenn and I have escaped to the beach for a while (with internet access, of course). So blogging may consist of boring details of my beach vacation--or maybe pictures or a podcast of anything I can find of interest. Are other people taking vacations this summer? And if so, do you find them relaxing or do they make you more stressed--I say both for me.

I have this notion that there's a difference between vacation which is supposed to be relaxing, and travel which is supposed to be running around seeing as much as you can. So "beach" versus "can we fit in one more museum?". Usually for me travel is physically exhausting but mentally clensing/relaxing and vacation... well I've never had one, I get bored and find something to do. I don't think I've ever sat on a beach for more than a few minutes. uuIt helps as a photographer if I have a camera I'm pretty self entertaining.

We recently bought a beach house. I find going that house very relaxing. It's ours so I don't need to worry about wrecking anything. We don't feel we need to visit or shop or see sites. We just relax, read, walk, bike and sit on the beach. They're the most relaxing vacations I've ever experienced.

It's been about 4 years since we've been on vacation. With a layoff, our daughter's wedding, traveling to see our son's military "graduations", my husband living half way across the country for a year, moving to a different part of the country... we just haven't had the initiative to put a vacation together.

I like my vacays to be of the sort where I go to a nice hotel, and just hang out without any pressure to "do things". I want maid service and meals that are cooked by someone else (not to mention cleaned up *grin*). Then I can relax.

I'm hoping we can plan something for the fall of this year to just go kickback and relax. We'll see if it's possible.

Maybe you should stop blogging. :) I heard a study on, I believe, ABC's nightly news saying 1 in 4 Americans do work while on vacation.

Helen -

The last podcast with the divorce lawyer was really great. Not being married I don't have much experience with such things, but she had some really great advice for people. Best of all was "do the right thing". Funny how that seems to work so often. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, think your podcasting is getting better with each show, and ask that you please tell your guest how well she was received from some of your audience.

Have a nice holiday.

A friend told me to check out your site because you can also easily top our much more limited cog psych degrees to boot.

So, I did. And I'm glad.

This is obviously off-topic (on topic: the answer is that I don't seem to experience the normally oft-mentioned stress during neither vacations nor holidays) but I would love to hear some properly scrubbed andecdotes dealing with the responses of grandmothers to their violent and impulsive granddaughters. I'm going to apologize right now if the obvious answer is to go check out one of your books. If it's a topic you've ever covered I'd please tell me where you have. My english is still not very good and that inhibits my field investigations so I have problems when I can properly explore this topic.

Thank you.

I recently went to Washington DC. I was stressed at first but was soon able to lose myself in the city. Have fun!

Jake,

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the podcast--it seems to be one that resonates with many people who have commented or emailed. I will tell our guest that it was a very informative and well-received.

Thanks for checking out my blog. I have not written on grandmothers and violent grandaughters and am not sure that there is any specific literature out there on this topic but it does seem that grandparents are raising their grandchildren more these days and therefore, confront more angry children who have parents who have left or abandoned them in some way. I have heard of several cases where grandaughters have killed or had their grandparents killed out of anger and resentment. If I come across anything more in the future, I will post on it.

I DO get tired on my vacations, but it is a diffeent kind of a tired. It is physically tired rather than emotionally tired. I get physically tired from playing lots of golf or fishing (I do not do the sit in the chair and drink beer fishing, not that there is anything wrong with that) or just chasing the kids. But very few phone calls, no (so far) emergencies, no insurance agencies, no listening to difficult details from other people lives that are difficult for them to share and difficult to respond to emotionall, etc etc etc. You get the picture.

So I like to get tired on vacation, but it is just the kind of tired that I need that makes me happier when I get back to work!
