More Than You Wanted to Know

Lots of people have asked for the story of my heart attack. It's here.

It's a completely valid point that heart disease is a bigger threat to women than breast cancer is. However, I think that comparing total deaths (half a million to 40,000 per year in the United States) overstates the case. Many of those half million women who die of heart disease are slowly of dying of something else at the same time — diabetes, or old age, or even breast cancer. A fairer comparison would be useful years of life lost rather than the number of people killed. I don't think that that comparison would be 10 to 1 for heart disease over breast cancer (in women). Even so, heart disease would probably still loom larger.

Thank god I have had doctors who have aggressively managed my hypertension and cholesterol levels since they were discovered when I was 42.

Women don't present with heart attacks in the classic elephant-on-chest mode, in my experience. In my ER, that abnormal EKG would have had you in a monitored bed faster than you could ever imagine.

Lucky that you asserted your thoughts to your doctor. I hope you amd your siblings have gone form MRA's to evaluate if anymore aneurysms are present. As you know they are genetic!

Come by when you can, I run a psych blog too.

Helen --

I would like to make a donation to your walk (even though it's over), but like a comment left on another post, the site is not secure and I don't want to submit my personal information that way. Is there either: 1) another site I can visit or 2) a way to mail you a check?

To fmf:

The walk is over--the best way to make a donation is to the American Heart Association when they come to your area for these heart walks or by mail at www.americanheart.org I believe--thanks!

You were lucky that your problems were diagnosed on time. It bothers me that the doctors wrote you off as a hysterical woman. My father know a woman who died of a brain tumor because her doctor wrote off her headaches as a hysterical woman.

Finally, the woman went to the ER one night and the ER doctor almost immediately diagnosed her correctly but it was too late to save her life. The oncologist that treated her said the survival rate of such tumors was over 90% when caught early. It seems the old hysterical woman stereotype is still fairly strong. Plus, in my experience, a lot of doctors don't listen very well.

Unfortunately, many women don't have the classic symptoms of heart attacks. I am curious to see what time of day your "anxiety" attacks occurred? I have been having them for about a year and all have been at night. I often feel like I'm going to die. It could be related to PTSD but after reading your post, I'm really going to get a good cardiac checkup. Health care professionals are especially bad about taking care of themselves.

Hi nurse practitioner,

My "panic attacks" occured day and night--they would get worse after 5 and I would feel sick for a long time afterward. With a panic attack, there is usually a classic peak and then the person feels better--I never did--for days. While you probably have nothing going on more than anxiety, it might help to get the anxiety checked out--mostly to make yourself feel better.
